Man charged over ex-girlfriend’s fatal stabbing becomes distressed in court

Candido Rodriguez appeared in court on Tuesday facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend Melanie Woods, 33. The case drew attention partly due to Rodriguez's emotional state during proceedings—he broke down in tears and became distressed when a photographer attempted to capture images, prompting the judge to intervene. The case highlights the serious consequences of domestic violence and the ongoing trauma such incidents bring to the court system.

Woods was found dead in April 2024 with over 20 stab wounds across her torso and legs and her throat slashed. Prosecutors alleged that Rodriguez, with whom Woods had been in an on-off relationship, was waiting in her Harlem apartment when she returned home from walking her dog at approximately 7am. Neighbours reported hearing shouting, crashes and screams before the disturbance ceased around 8am; Rodriguez was later seen on video leaving the building and hailing a taxi at around 8:05am. The defendant is currently being held in the psychiatric ward and awaiting evaluation prior to trial as his legal team discusses a potential plea deal.
