Its lasting cultural impact and critical acclaim stem partly from its more understated, character-driven approach compared with the broader satire of other early Black Mirror episodes, a style that influenced many later instalments. The episode is also notable for being the only one of the original series not written by creator Charlie Brooker.

It was written instead by Jesse Armstrong, later known for creating Succession, who at the time was primarily associated with British sitcoms such as Peep Show and The Thick of It. Because Armstrong wrote the episode rather than Brooker, he retained the rights to it, which at one point opened the door to a potential feature film adaptation reportedly linked to Robert Downey Jr., though no such film ultimately materialised.
