- Stefanik called for changes to the state GOP’s structure and leadership.

## Summary

Blakeman has sharply criticised outgoing Representative Elise Stefanik, accusing her of failing to support New York Republicans after his gubernatorial defeat. His remarks add to a public dispute over responsibility for the party’s poor election results, while Stefanik has called for changes to its leadership and structure.

Blakeman lost to incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul, taking 39.7% of the vote to her 60.1%. Stefanik considered a run for governor but withdrew after President Donald Trump backed Blakeman, who went on to secure the Republican nomination unopposed; she did not campaign for him or appear at his events. Stefanik, who plans to leave Congress in January, said Democrats’ gains, including five governorships, showed the state party needed to reassess and rebuild.
