Bluesky has an official CEO again

Engadget · 1 month ago

Bluesky has confirmed Toni Schneider as its permanent chief executive, four months after he took the role on an interim basis. Schneider had stepped in after Jay Graber, who had led the decentralised social media platform since 2021, announced in March 2026 that she was standing down. The move gives the open-source platform settled leadership as it shifts its focus towards scaling and execution.

Schneider, previously an advisor and investor in Bluesky and the founding chief executive of WordPress parent Automattic, said he took the job because he believed in the company's mission of driving large-scale adoption of open and decentralised public conversation. Graber, who described the company as needing "a seasoned operator focused on scaling and execution", has moved to the role of Chief Innovation Officer. Schneider pointed to upcoming features, including the ability to create smaller, more private communities in the "Atmosphere", building on Bluesky's June announcement that Reddit-style topic-based communities would arrive on the platform this year.

  • Toni Schneider is now Bluesky's permanent CEO after four months interim.
  • He replaces Jay Graber, who is now Chief Innovation Officer.
  • Smaller private communities and Reddit-style groups are planned this year.
