A BMW driver accused of racing an Audi TT moments before a crash that killed a young mother and her four-year-old daughter has denied causing their deaths by dangerous driving. Justyna Hulboj, 27, and Lena Czepczor, four, were struck on the pavement of Scott Hall Road in Leeds on 16 January 2023 as they walked to nursery, when the Audi lost control at nearly 90mph on a 40mph road and mounted the kerb. Jasskamal Riyat, 37, who was driving the BMW, denies racing the other car, while Audi driver Hardeep Bhachu has already admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and awaits sentencing.

Leeds Crown Court heard that in-car footage showed Riyat and Bhachu apparently goading each other about their cars' power at traffic lights before accelerating away from a roundabout, with Riyat heard laughing and saying "he is gone" as the Audi sped off. Prosecutors argue Riyat bears equal responsibility even though he did not crash, saying both men drove dangerously and with no regard for pedestrians. Riyat reportedly filmed the wreckage as he drove past and continued on to work; he and Bhachu were not charged until May 2023. The trial is ongoing and expected to conclude by the end of the week.
