A Boston man has been charged after a boat crash in Boston Harbor killed Elizabeth “Lizzie” Dankert, a 24-year-old former university footballer, and injured two other women. Prosecutors allege that Lawrence Shieh was intoxicated, distracted and dancing at the helm shortly before the vessel struck a pier, making the case a serious alleged instance of dangerous boating under the influence.

Shieh, 40, faces charges including involuntary manslaughter and operating a boat while under the influence causing death and serious injury. Prosecutors say his blood-alcohol level was 0.20, compared with Massachusetts’s 0.08 legal limit, and navigation data indicated the boat was travelling at 36mph when it hit Pier 4R on 13 May; they also allege he took the boat without permission from Freedom Boat Club. Dankert, an Andover resident and 2024 Union College graduate, died from blunt-force head injuries; Shieh was released on $25,000 bail and is due in court on 8 October.
