## Key points

- Aikman is expected to leave ESPN after this season.
- Greg Olsen is tipped to replace him.
- Buck and Aikman’s broadcast partnership may end soon.

## Summary

Reports suggest Troy Aikman is likely to leave ESPN after this NFL season, ending his partnership with Joe Buck as the network’s lead broadcast team. ESPN is expected to appoint Greg Olsen as Aikman’s replacement, though it remains uncertain whether the current pair will work together through the network’s Super Bowl broadcast in February.

The article says ESPN decided over the summer to move on from Aikman after giving Buck a six-year, $108 million extension without offering Aikman a new deal. A reported argument between the commentators concerned Aikman’s contract talks, but the article says it did not prompt the decision. It argues that ESPN may favour Buck because elite play-by-play broadcasters are harder to replace, while noting the pair’s long-standing reputation and the uncertainty around whether Buck and Olsen could match their chemistry.
