## Key points

- Emails warned RTE and Nova of a supposed 45-minute countdown.
- Police found no explosives at the affected sites.
- Authorities have not established who sent the threats or whether they were coordinated.

## Summary

New details indicate that the threats sent to RTE and Bulgaria’s Nova TV included an email warning that an explosive would detonate in 45 minutes and claiming responsibility for recent plane hoaxes. The identity of the sender and whether the incidents are coordinated remain unknown; Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said European security agencies had not determined whether the threats came from individuals or a wider operation.

The threats disrupted television stations across Europe on Friday, including Ireland’s RTE, Britain’s Sky and Nova TV in Bulgaria, but police found no explosives. RTE replaced programmes with music and a recorded message for up to three hours while police searched its Dublin site for more than three hours; Nova’s newsroom was evacuated, cleared and resumed normal work without interrupting broadcasts. The incidents follow hoax threats affecting flights across several European countries and other recent cyberattacks, highlighting how false alerts can cause disruption and anxiety.
