## Key points

- Alaska’s governor has ordered a probe into Peltola’s campaign.
- A same-name candidate will appear on the Senate ballot.
- The legality of the recruitment remains disputed.

## Summary

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has ordered an investigation into whether Democrat Mary Peltola’s Senate campaign should face criminal charges or civil penalties over recruiting a candidate with the same name as Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. The state probe adds to a fast-moving dispute over election rules and the campaign’s tactics, days before voters choose between the two Sullivans and other candidates.

The New York Times reported that Peltola campaign advisers and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee recruited retiree Daniel J. Sullivan, who will appear on Tuesday’s ballot alongside the senator, Peltola and Gerald Heikes. The Justice Department has separately sued to prevent the race being certified if Senator Sullivan loses, but the article says the suit identifies no specific illegal act; a judge has expedited the case and noted the administration waited until voting had begun to file it. Peltola called the revelations a distraction, while Republicans accused her campaign of misleading voters and Democrats argued that similar tactics are used by both parties.
