British-American playwright, novelist and cultural commentator Bonnie Greer has died aged 77 following a brief illness, her husband David Hutchins announced. Greer built a prominent career in British public life, becoming known for her writing, broadcasting appearances and commentary on culture, politics and race after relocating from the United States to Britain in 1986.

Born in Chicago, Greer became a British citizen in 1997 and won the Verity Bargate Award for her play Munda Negra, while also writing novels including Hanging by Her Teeth and Entropy, and works such as Obama Music and a biography of Langston Hughes. She served on the boards of the British Museum, Royal Opera House and London Film School, was appointed OBE in 2010, made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2022, and was a familiar panellist on Newsnight Review and Question Time as well as Chancellor of Kingston University.
