Bonnie Tyler, 80s pop legend known for Total Eclipse of the Heart and more, dies aged 75

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose husky, powerful voice defined 1980s classics such as Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died aged 75. Her family and team announced that she passed away unexpectedly in hospital in Portugal, following the illness for which she had been receiving treatment. Her death marks the loss of one of Britain's most distinctive pop voices, whose signature power ballad is still regarded as a benchmark for the genre.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen near Swansea, Tyler rose from singing covers in local clubs to worldwide fame after being signed by RCA. Vocal cord surgery gave her voice its trademark edge, powering her 1977 breakout It's a Heartache and later Jim Steinman-penned hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero from the Footloose soundtrack. In May she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery near Faro, was placed in an induced coma and remained in intensive care. She stayed a major force in Europe into the 1990s and represented the UK at Eurovision.
