Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer best known for her 1983 power ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart", has died aged 75, her family announced on Thursday. She passed away unexpectedly at a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness, marking the loss of one of pop music's most recognisable voices.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler became internationally famous for her raspy voice and hits including "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out for a Hero". Her signature song, produced by Jim Steinman, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and later surpassed a billion streams amid renewed interest during the 2017 and 2024 solar eclipses. She had been hospitalised in May for emergency intestinal surgery and placed in an induced coma. During her career she earned three Grammy nominations, represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013 and was appointed an MBE in 2023. She is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973.
