Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit Total Eclipse of the Heart saw a sharp rise in Spotify listening during Wednesday’s solar eclipse, as people across the UK marked the event by playing the song. The surge also carried added poignancy in Mumbles, Swansea, where the Welsh singer had lived and where residents were preparing tributes following her death in July aged 75.

Spotify reported a 94% increase in UK streams of the song on 12 August and a 14% rise worldwide, nearly doubling its UK audience for the day. Musician Mal Pope said he heard children singing it around Mumbles, while a procession and tribute concert were planned before Tyler’s funeral on 17 August; the song was originally a UK number one for two weeks and has since exceeded one billion Spotify streams.
