Boredom Led the Band Styx to Record One of Their Final Big Hits in 1991

American Songwriter ·

Styx’s “Love At First Sight” came from keyboardist Glen Burtnik’s boredom during the long recording sessions for the band’s 1991 album, *Edge Of The Century*. The song became one of Styx’s final major chart successes, though its creation was less romantic than its lyrics might suggest.

Burtnik said he developed much of the music while playing a piano during studio delays, then made a demo at home. Dennis DeYoung wrote most of the lyrics and James Young contributed to the bridge. The album also featured “Show Me The Way”, Styx’s final Top 5 hit; the band’s previous chart successes included “Babe”, their only No. 1 single, which held the top spot for two weeks.
