Born 60 Years Ago Today in East Texas, the Beauty Queen Turned Country Star Whose Signature Hit Soundtracked Early 2000s Proms and Graduations
Country singer Lee Ann Womack turns 60 today, marking six decades since her birth in Jacksonville, East Texas, on 19 August 1966. She is best known for her 2000 single "I Hope You Dance", a chart-topping crossover hit that became a defining soundtrack for graduations and proms in the early 2000s and remains her signature song nearly 30 years on.
"I Hope You Dance" reached number one on the country singles chart and number 14 on the pop chart, and was named Single of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, as well as winning a Grammy for Best Country Song. Womack, a six-time CMA Award winner, grew up around country music through her father's work as a radio DJ, studied music at South Plains Junior College and Belmont University, briefly competed in beauty pageants, and paused her career for motherhood before breaking through in the late 1990s with her self-titled debut album and its 2000 follow-up, I Hope You Dance, produced by her second husband, Frank Liddell.
