A boy who went missing in the US state of New Mexico in 2023 has been found safe and reunited with his father, ending a three-year search. Andrew Escobar, who was 11 when he disappeared, is believed to have been taken by his mother, Miriam Felix, during a custody dispute with his father, Juan Escobar. The case highlights how parental abduction can keep a child hidden for years despite the involvement of multiple authorities.

Andrew was located last week by police in El Paso, Texas, when his mother attempted to cross into the US from Mexico and triggered a border alert. Officers checked the mother's and boy's identification, recognised Andrew as a listed missing person, and detained them both. His father said he learned the news in an unexpected phone call from El Paso police, describing his disbelief on being told they had his son. State and federal authorities had been searching for Andrew since he was declared missing in 2023.
