Brave 13-year-old is hailed as a hero after he was killed shielding younger sister from shooting

A 13-year-old boy, Sha'Michael Russell, was killed on 28 September whilst shielding his three-year-old sister from gunfire at an apartment complex in Shreveport, Louisiana. His brave actions protected his sibling, who remained unharmed, though his sacrifice has resonated deeply within his community and beyond.

Russell was one of three children shot at Olde Salem Village Apartments; the other victims, aged two and seventeen, were injured. Two men, both aged 19, Javieon Abbott and Alonzo Abbott, have been charged in connection with the shooting. Since his death, Russell was posthumously awarded the Youth Heroism Award by the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, and a fundraiser was established for funeral expenses and financial support to the family.
