## Key points

- Schenn is leading by example for the Islanders.
- He has nine points in 14 games.
- Training camp and DeBoer’s system have helped him settle in.

## Summary

Brayden Schenn has become a key voice and mentor for the New York Islanders while also making a strong contribution on the ice. Coach Pete DeBoer says the 35-year-old has embraced the leadership role he was brought in to fill, helping the team build cohesion from the start of the season.

Schenn has scored four goals and made five assists in 14 games, centring a line with Emil Heineman and Victor Eklund that has been among the Islanders’ most consistent. He struggled after joining at last season’s trade deadline, but says training camp, familiar teammates and DeBoer’s system have helped him settle in. Schenn previously captained St Louis and won a Stanley Cup; DeBoer sees qualities in him that could suit a future head coach.
