Brenda Bird, an 83-year-old resident of Margate, Kent, saw her water bill from Southern Water increase more than fourfold from £100 to £403 in January 2026, following the replacement of stopcocks on her meter the previous August. Despite having lived in her home for 45 years with consistent billing and no evidence of a leak, she was told she must have used more water, prompting her to take extreme measures—recycling every drop through collected shower water and installing water butts—to reduce consumption. Her experience reflects a broader pattern of billing problems affecting numerous customers of major water companies, including issues with unauthorised direct debit switches and inconsistent charges that have caused considerable stress and frustration.

The situation began after Southern Water replaced her meter's stopcocks, after which her previously stable six-monthly bills of approximately £100 changed dramatically. When Brenda contacted the company and an engineer visited, he acknowledged "something drastically wrong" but the problem remained unresolved for months, with multiple bills arriving for varying amounts. After escalating to the chief executive, Southern Water eventually credited her account with a goodwill payment and claimed to have fixed a leak, though Brenda remains unclear about how her usage allegedly increased so significantly despite her careful conservation efforts. A Southern Water spokesman apologised for the complications and stated they were reviewing their processes.
