Over a hundred wealthy British residents have petitioned newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham to implement higher taxes targeting the ultra-rich. Coordinated through the Patriotic Millionaires organisation, the 120 signatories include prominent figures such as musician Brian Eno, former footballer Gary Lineker, and screenwriter Richard Curtis, alongside business leaders and writers. Their open letter distinguishes between taxing ordinary wage earners and taxing extreme wealth, asserting that the richest segments of society possess both the financial capacity and a patriotic duty to contribute additional funds.

The group specifically endorses a two percent levy on individuals with assets surpassing ten million pounds, positioning this as essential for creating a more balanced society and generating capital for regional development and public services. Burnham, who assumed office on 20 July, has not ruled out adopting wealth tax measures and has already announced other economic policies including reduced electricity taxes and subsidised bus fares. The petition represents an organised campaign for mandatory wealth taxation alongside existing voluntary donation schemes available through the Treasury.
