Britain’s Matthew Brennan won stage five of the Vuelta a España, taking his second stage victory in his first Grand Tour. The 21-year-old’s sprint success further strengthens his reputation as an emerging rider, while Tadej Pogacar retained a commanding overall lead.

Brennan completed the 173.3km stage to Roquetes Terres de l’Ebre in three hours, 47 minutes and two seconds, ahead of Belgium’s Jordi Meeus and Italy’s Vincenzo Albanese. Pogacar finished safely in the main group and leads Primoz Roglic by three minutes and 21 seconds, with Enric Mas a further 11 seconds behind; stage six will include four classified climbs and a gravel section near the finish.
