A 22-year-old British activist, Finn Joughin, faces deportation from Israel after reportedly being held and assaulted by Israeli settlers in the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair over the weekend. Joughin was reportedly taking part in "protective presence" work, a tactic used by activists to deter settler violence against Palestinians, when the confrontation occurred, and his case has drawn attention to the volatile situation facing foreign activists operating in the West Bank.

According to his lawyer, Inbar Shaked Vardi, settler children tried to break into fencing protecting the village's sports centre, and Joughin was accused of sexually harassing a child, an allegation his lawyer denies, before armed settlers forcibly took him to the Carmel settlement, restrained him and filmed him. Israeli police then arrested him on suspicion of assault, and following a pre-deportation hearing at Jerusalem Magistrates' Court on 30 August, authorities ordered his removal from the country, with a flight back to the UK scheduled for around midday GMT on 31 August. Israeli police said in a statement that they arrested a "foreign national who disturbed public order" and that a complaint was filed against him over suspected offences involving a minor.
