British driver Andy Green and engineering firm JCB have set a new land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, reaching 406.320mph in the JCB Hydromax. The achievement is significant as a demonstration of hydrogen technology’s potential in high-performance engineering.

The attempt took place in Utah and came 20 years after Green set JCB’s FIA-certified diesel land speed record of 350.092mph in the Dieselmax. Green also holds the outright land speed record of 763.035mph, set in 1997, when he became the first—and still only—person to break the sound barrier on land.
