A British father is due to fly to Cyprus on Monday to face charges after his two-year-old son died in a fall from a hotel window in July. The 37-year-old banking executive, accused of causing death by a rash, reckless or dangerous act, faces up to four years in prison if convicted, in a case that has drawn attention to safety at the resort where the child died.

The incident happened on 12 July at the King Evelthon Hotel in Paphos, when the father placed his son on a fourth-floor windowsill while waiting for a lift, believing the window was shut; it was not, and the toddler fell 33ft to his death. He was held on remand for eight days before being charged, and later posted bail of £25,750, with a travel ban temporarily lifted so he could return home to bury his son, a period that ends when he must surrender his passport in Cyprus. The boy is reportedly the third British guest to die at the hotel in four years, though police attention has centred on the father rather than the venue; his lawyer has asked Cyprus's attorney general to drop the case on humanitarian grounds ahead of a court appearance on Thursday.
