A British pensioner died after getting into difficulty in the water at S’Arenal Gros beach in northern Ibiza on Tuesday afternoon. Lifeguards and several people nearby, including a British doctor, a firefighter and an off-duty nurse, tried to save her; police and paramedics continued the efforts, but she was pronounced dead at about 5.30pm.

The woman had been staying at a hotel less than a kilometre from the beach. The Civil Guard has ordered an autopsy to establish whether she drowned or a health problem contributed to her death.
