Broadway Box Office: ‘Moulin Rouge’ Hits $2.3 Million In Closing Week
Moulin Rouge! closed on Broadway on 30 August with its strongest weekly gross in several years, taking $2.3 million in its final week. The milestone caps a long run for the jukebox musical, which recently drew fresh attention thanks to a guest turn by Megan Thee Stallion, and underlines how closing weeks can drive a surge in demand from theatregoers keen to catch a show before it ends.
The final week saw the musical play to more than 100% capacity, with the highest average paid admission on Broadway at $223.46, boosted by the return of original star Aaron Tveit for most performances and a cast reunion during the last show. Even so, the total fell short of the $2.7 million taken over nine performances during Christmas week in 2019. It topped the weekly charts ahead of Hamilton ($2 million), MJ ($1.7 million), The Lion King ($1.59 million) and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ($1.57 million), while horror play Paranormal Activity opened strongly with $735,747 in its first week. Overall Broadway grosses rose almost 4% and attendance 2% week-on-week, though several shows, including the soon-to-close Six and Stranger Things, ran at around 60% capacity ahead of the quieter Labor Day period.
