The UK's largest teaching union has warned that Prime Minister Andy Burnham's plans to give technical and academic education equal status will fail unless schools receive significant extra investment. Burnham recently announced proposals to introduce technical subjects for 14-year-old pupils from September 2028, aiming to tackle youth unemployment and continue decades of government efforts to achieve parity between vocational and academic education routes.

National Education Union general secretary Daniel Kebede said the changes were welcome but would "hit the skids" without proper funding, arguing the further education sector is already severely underfunded and teacher pay has not been fully funded for next year. Other education leaders, including NAHT's Paul Whiteman and ASCL's Pepe Di'Iasio, said the announcement lacked detail and criticised its timing during the summer holidays, while a University of Exeter professor argued that genuine parity requires wider cultural change in how schools, employers and universities value technical routes, not just ministerial declarations.
