Assembly Bill 2017, sponsored by Democratic Assemblymember Matt Haney, passed the Assembly by 64-1 in late May and must clear the state Senate before the legislative session ends on Monday to reach Governor Gavin Newsom's desk. Supporters argue it addresses a long-standing inequity for Muslim students and workers who have had to choose between religious observance and school or work commitments.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the Ramadan fasting month, while Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son. Advocacy groups including the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Impact Council have backed the bill, while the conservative California Family Council opposes provisions allowing schools to hold curriculum-linked celebratory exercises, arguing similar recognition has not been extended to Christian and Jewish holidays. If signed, the two Eid holidays would join Lunar New Year and Diwali among days California recognises, though Washington state was the first in the US to do so.
