Canberra United’s A-League Women future secured as date set for Men’s team entry

The Guardian · 1 day ago

Canberra United's future in the A-League Women has been secured after the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) confirmed that Australian Sports Group (ASG) has taken over the club's licence, ending two years of uncertainty. The move follows the withdrawal of previous backers Capital Football, after which the ACT government stepped in to keep the two-time A-League Women champions afloat while a new owner was sought. The delay had drawn criticism from club captain Michelle Heyman, and the deal now gives Canberra a stable long-term backer for the first time in years.

As part of the agreement, ASG holds an exclusive option to launch an A-League Men team in Canberra from the 2028/29 season, which would make Canberra United part of an integrated men's and women's club rather than the competition's only standalone women's side. ASG chief executive Theo Fotopoulos pointed to the club's strong 18-year fan base as a foundation for renewed investment, while APL chair Stephen Conroy thanked the Canberra football community and ACT government for their support throughout the uncertainty.
