Newly released prison photographs show captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro smiling and flashing a peace sign while in custody at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn. Maduro, 63, and his wife Cilia Flores were seized by US Special Forces during an overnight raid on their compound on 3 January, and he now faces US charges of narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking and illegal weapons offences, to which both have pleaded not guilty. His relaxed demeanour in custody comes as President Donald Trump touts a major new oil agreement with Venezuela's interim government, underscoring the geopolitical fallout from Maduro's capture.

The image, dated 25 June, shows Maduro in a grey tracksuit and white trainers, appearing notably slimmer than before his detention. Separately, Trump announced what he called the "biggest oil deal in world history," giving the US an effective 55% stake in a new company controlling more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan reserves across 17 fields, brokered with interim leader Delcy Rodríguez and credited to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Venezuela's government said the deal could attract $100 billion in investment and generate over $209 billion in tax revenue, with Trump insisting it comes at "no cost to the American taxpayer."
