Leeds United beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the City Ground to reach the Carabao Cup third round, their second win over the Premier League club in three days and a first victory there since 1972. It capped a difficult few days for new Forest manager Oliver Glasner, who insisted he was "no magician" after a turbulent period for the club, while elsewhere in the competition Brentford thrashed Birmingham 6-1 and League One Peterborough stunned Championship Watford 5-1.

Dan James's 50th-minute strike and a Neco Williams own goal secured Leeds' win, while at St Andrew's, Callum Wilson scored on his full debut and captain Nathan Collins netted twice as Brentford routed Birmingham. Other notable results included West Ham's 4-1 win over Southampton, inspired by teenager Josh Ayala's brace, Hull edging past Stoke 5-4 on penalties, and Ipswich's Marcelino Núñez scoring a halfway-line wonder goal in a 3-1 win over Leicester. Further wins were recorded by Middlesbrough, Norwich, Wolves, Fleetwood, Sheffield United, Leyton Orient, Lincoln, Millwall, Barnsley and Reading.
