Utah parents Mitchell and Carrie Murray pleaded guilty to child-abuse offences after their 18-month-old daughter, Ruby, died from malnutrition and dehydration in March 2025. Authorities said the death followed a severe pattern of neglect, and both parents were sentenced to consecutive prison terms while being placed on the state’s child-abuse registry.

Ruby was reportedly left in a dirty crib for prolonged periods, with limited human contact, infrequent nappy changes and food debris around her. She weighed about 17 pounds, below the fifth percentile for her age; investigators said she spent only slightly more than six hours outside the crib during her final four days, while another person was recorded as present for just 49 minutes.
