Paris-based mk2 films has acquired international sales rights to acclaimed Mexican director Carlos Reygadas's new feature Heil Jupiter!, ahead of its world premiere at the New York Film Festival in late September. It marks Reygadas's first film since 2018's Our Time and caps an unusually long production process, having first been announced roughly eight years ago under the title Wake of Umbra.

The film is described as a visionary and nightmarish reflection on the endurance of love and beauty amid darkness, following two young couples on a remote coastline watched over by a mysterious, godlike entity. It was shot across five countries — Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Norway and Mexico — and produced by Cristina Velasco and Reygadas himself, with a wide network of co-production partners. Reygadas, who won the Cannes Jury Prize for Silent Light and Best Director for Tenebras Lux, previously spoke of the project's long gestation as a process of "deep investigation" when giving an update at Locarno last year.
