- Villa had threatened legal action over his comments.
- He said the remarks about Emery and Villa were meant as a joke.

## Summary

Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa, its owners and supporters, saying his language about the club was “clumsy and wrong”. The apology follows Villa’s announcement that it would initiate legal action over comments the club called “unacceptable insults”.

Carragher had suggested manager Unai Emery might want to lead a “giant” club and told Villa fans to “shut up”, adding that Villa would never be Manchester United. He said the remarks were intended in jest, but understood they had not come across that way. His comments came amid speculation about Manchester United manager Michael Carrick’s position after a poor start to the season.
