Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, has described three experiences in which he believed he came close to death, saying they profoundly shaped his outlook and spiritual life. The singer-songwriter said these moments left him feeling humbled and ultimately contributed to his decision to embrace Islam and step away from mainstream pop stardom.

The first incident occurred when Stevens contracted tuberculosis in 1968 and spent months recovering, prompting him to reassess his life. He later nearly drowned while swimming off Malibu, reportedly praying for help and promising to devote himself to God if saved; he converted to Islam soon afterwards. A third serious health scare, involving a near-fatal illness, reinforced his belief that he needed to “bow down” and live with greater spiritual purpose.
