A Queensland jury has found cattle farmer Darryl Valroy Young, 63, guilty of murdering three neighbours and attempting to murder a fourth, after chilling evidence emerged that he posed for a thumbs-up selfie just hours after the killings. Young was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 40 years by Justice Christopher Johnstone, who described the attack as "heinous" and said Young had opened fire on the family as though "killing feral animals" on his property. The case has drawn attention both for the brutality of the crime and for the unsettling image of the calm, apparently unbothered killer shortly afterwards.

Mervyn Schwarz, his wife Maree and her son Graham Tighe were shot dead at the gate of Young's cattle station at Bogie, southwest of Townsville, on 4 August 2022, after Young called them to a meeting over a belief they had stolen his livestock. Graham's brother Ross Tighe was also shot but escaped, driving 40km despite his injuries to reach phone reception and alert police; he later underwent lifesaving surgery. The thumbs-up photo, taken roughly six hours after the shootings by a renewable energy worker who was asked by police to document everyone present, was among more than 100 exhibits shown during the four-week trial, alongside crime scene images of the victims' bodies near the property's driveway. The jury deliberated for three days before reaching its verdict.
