M*A*S*H, the celebrated CBS war sitcom based on Richard Hooker's novel and Robert Altman's 1970 film, was known for blending comedy with sobering wartime drama during its 11-year run. Among its more divisive instalments was a Season 4 bottle episode that broke sharply from the show's usual ensemble format, testing how far a sitcom audience would follow it into unconventional territory.

The episode in question, "Hawkeye" (Season 4, Episode 18), sees Alan Alda's Captain Hawkeye Pierce crash his Jeep and take shelter, concussed, in a Korean farmer's home. Unable to communicate with the family, who don't speak English, he talks almost non-stop to stay conscious while awaiting rescue, with Alda the only principal cast member to appear on screen. It joined other boundary-pushing episodes, such as "Abyssinia, Henry" (which killed off a main character), the dream-sequence episode "Dreams", and the sombre finales "The Interview" and "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen", in showing the series' willingness to depart from typical sitcom conventions.
