North Ronaldsay, the northernmost island in the Orkneys with a population of fewer than 60 people, is celebrating the arrival of its first baby in 34 years. The birth of Duncan Wilder Thorstein Traill Suarez Ford represents a significant milestone for the isolated community, which had not welcomed a newborn since August 1992.

Duncan was born on 15 September to Alice Traill Ford and her partner Jorge Suarez, weighing 8lb 9oz. The family, who normally live in Costa Rica where they run a school, decided to have the baby on the island after visiting Alice's ancestral home during the summer; two midwives were transported by coastguard helicopter to assist with the delivery. Alice's ancestors, the Traill family, purchased North Ronaldsay in 1727, and the baby was named after her grandfather, the former Laird of the island.
