Celebrity Docs Dominate Emmy Nonfiction Nominations: Marty Short, Mel Brooks, John Candy, Scorsese, Jayne Mansfield/Mariska Hargitay & More

Deadline · 1 month ago

At the 2026 Emmy nominations announced on 8 July, celebrity documentaries dominated the nonfiction categories, with films and series about John Candy, Martin Short, Mel Brooks, Martin Scorsese, and Jayne Mansfield all earning major recognition. The trend matters because it shows Emmy voters rewarding star-focused factual programming as heavily as scripted acting performances, marking a strong moment for the documentary genre.

Leading the field was the two-part HBO film Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man! with six nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and a directing nod for Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio. John Candy: I Like Me, directed by Colin Hanks, earned five nominations, while Marty, Life Is Short (Netflix) and the Apple TV series Mr. Scorsese each took three. Mariska Hargitay's HBO film My Mom Jayne, about her mother Jayne Mansfield, secured nominations for directing, cinematography and Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special; Hargitay is also set to host the ceremony. Series about Rafael Nadal and imprisoned mogul Sean Combs also featured.
