Celtic find value in ‘special’ Duran – but does ambition reach further still?

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Celtic took a commanding 3-0 lead over LASK in the first leg of their Champions League play-off, putting them firmly on course to reach the group stage after a dominant attacking display in Glasgow. Camilo Duran scored twice, including a slick team goal, while Benjamin Nygren also netted, and the performance signalled real ambition and quality from Brendan Rodgers's successor's side despite ongoing defensive concerns that LASK, the Austrian champions, exposed with numerous chances.

The result marks a striking turnaround from a year earlier, when Celtic, then managed by Brendan Rodgers, were eliminated by Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty on penalties. Nygren has now scored four goals in four games this season, teenage right-back Colby Donovan impressed on his watch by incoming Scotland boss Sebastien Pocognoli, and Celtic — who had won just 10 of their previous 50 European games — now stand on the brink of an extra £40m in Champions League revenue, though manager Martin O'Neill has urged caution before the second leg.

  • Celtic beat LASK 3-0 in Champions League play-off first leg.
  • Camilo Duran scored twice; Celtic close to reaching group stage.
  • Result reverses last year's shock exit to Kairat Almaty on penalties.
