‘Chapa 100’ is a surrealist romance project from Mozambican director Ique Langa, presented at Locarno Film Festival’s Open Doors co-production platform. Set in Maputo, it follows two older street vendors whose tentative love is disrupted when one is killed by a minibus and his spirit becomes bound to it. The film matters as a portrait of later-life love, urban hardship and the emotional connections formed in everyday public life.

The story centres on 80-year-old flower seller Sitóe and Valentina, a vegetable seller in her seventies, who hope to buy land to grow flowers and vegetables together. After Sitóe dies chasing a thief who has stolen Valentina’s rented wig, flowers begin appearing inside the chapa, or local minibus, that struck him. Langa describes chapas as moving portraits of Maputo, where passengers’ exhaustion, humour, silence and hope intersect; the project is produced by Lara Sousa and was among 2026 Open Doors works-in-progress focused on African cinema.
