Chelsea have made an emphatic early success of their £117m signing of Morgan Rogers, with the England forward involved in four of the club's first seven league goals of the season and set to face Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday. Arsenal had long been favourites to sign Rogers from Aston Villa after winning the Premier League, but their hesitancy in negotiations over the summer allowed Chelsea to swoop in decisively, having tracked the player since before his 2024 move to Villa from Middlesbrough.
Arsenal reportedly valued Rogers at around £80m while Villa held out for more, particularly after Nottingham Forest sold Elliot Anderson for £116m, and the delay let Chelsea open talks and complete the deal within five days. Chelsea instead signed Christos Tzolis for £34m and moved on, leaving Mikel Arteta's attacking options, following the departures of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, comparatively light. Rogers, now the third-most expensive player in English football history, has already scored and set up goals in wins over Fulham and Brighton under Xabi Alonso, whose more transitional style has suited the 24-year-old.

The deal has stood out because Arsenal, who had won the Premier League and were long seen as favourites to buy him, hesitated over the fee and lost out to Chelsea, who moved quickly to complete the transfer.
Villa held firm on their asking price, partly because of a recent record-breaking sale elsewhere in the league, while Arsenal's valuation fell short. Chelsea, who had watched Rogers since before his move to Villa in 2024, stepped in and closed the deal within days, later also signing forward Christos Tzolis instead of pursuing Rogers further for Arsenal.
Rogers has started strongly for Chelsea under new manager Xabi Alonso, contributing to goals in the club's opening league matches.
