## Key points

- China confirms talks about a possible Xi-Trump-Putin meeting.
- The gathering could happen this month in Shenzhen.
- Analysts expect symbolism to outweigh substantive agreements.

## Summary

China says it is discussing a possible meeting between Xi Jinping, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which could take place this month during an Asia-Pacific summit in Shenzhen. If held, it would be an unprecedented gathering, but analysts say its main significance may be the image of the three leaders together rather than any agreement.

The meeting has not been confirmed, and its format and agenda remain unclear. Trump is expected to meet Xi for the third time this year as they try to maintain a trade truce due to expire in January; US officials have pressed China on agricultural purchases and critical minerals. Trump has expressed interest in nuclear arms control talks, while Putin wants to discuss Ukraine, but analysts say China is unlikely to engage substantively on those issues.
