Chinese President Xi Jinping is due to arrive in Washington for a two-day summit with Donald Trump, amid tensions over artificial intelligence, trade, intellectual property, rare-earth minerals and China’s support for Iran. The meeting is expected to test a fragile trade truce while addressing wider strategic rivalry, particularly the race for AI leadership.

Talks are expected to cover tariff reductions on non-strategic goods, rare-earth exports, export controls and Chinese shipments of chemicals used to make fentanyl. Trump may also seek the release of Gulshan Abbas, an American detained in China for eight years. The visit includes military ceremonies, cultural engagements and a state dinner attended by prominent technology executives, while an earlier agreement included Chinese purchases of US agricultural goods and 200 Boeing aircraft.
