## Key points

- Richmond Christmas Fair has cancelled its planned live reindeer attraction.
- Organisers cited pressure on volunteers and concerns about disruption.
- An animal rights group welcomed the decision; some families were disappointed.

## Summary

Richmond Christmas Fair in North Yorkshire has cancelled a planned live reindeer attraction after strong criticism and pressure on its volunteer organisers. The committee said it wanted to protect volunteers from harassment and prevent protests disrupting the event, while acknowledging that some families would be disappointed.

The fair had advertised that reindeer might appear on Sunday, 29 November. Organisers said the animals would have been cared for by experienced handlers and praised the booked company’s professionalism and commitment to animal welfare; the North East Animal Rights group welcomed the cancellation. The event, run by the Richmond Business and Tourism Association and partly funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, will still offer other festive activities.
