Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has surpassed the lifetime worldwide box-office total of 300: Rise of an Empire within five days of release, continuing a much stronger-than-expected commercial run. The comparison highlights the scale of the film’s opening, particularly as it has already outperformed several earlier large-scale historical and mythological epics.

The Odyssey earned about $265 million worldwide in its opening weekend and was approaching $500 million in its second weekend, making it Nolan’s biggest global debut. With a reported $250 million budget, it has also overtaken the total global takings of Exodus: Gods and Kings and Blade Runner 2049; 300: Rise of an Empire, released in 2014 as a standalone sequel to Zack Snyder’s 300, finished with roughly $330 million worldwide.
