UK poetry sales are heading for a record year, driven largely by the success of Christopher Nolan's blockbuster film adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. The surge matters because it shows a cinematic release can dramatically revive interest in an ancient text, pushing poetry further from its academic roots into mainstream, gift-friendly territory alongside the rise of "Instapoets" such as Rupi Kaur.

Poetry sales topped £8m in the first 30 weeks of 2026, up 13.3% year-on-year, and are expected to exceed £15m for the year, according to NielsenIQ. UK print sales of The Odyssey rose 1,400% in the four weeks after the film's mid-July release, with Homer's editions generating £980,000 so far this year and potentially challenging Rupi Kaur's record for the highest annual UK sales by a poet. The film itself opened to $264m globally, Nolan's best-ever debut, while other poets, including Donna Ashworth and breakout star Lucas Jones, are also contributing to the wider boom; translator Emily Wilson, however, has publicly criticised the film for lacking depth.
