## Key points

- Schumer expects to remain Democratic majority leader.
- Five incoming senators oppose his leadership.
- He cited living costs, corruption and the Iran war as priorities.

## Summary

Chuck Schumer said he expects to be re-elected as Senate Democratic majority leader after Democrats’ midterm victories, despite opposition from some incoming senators. The leadership vote will be held within the Democratic caucus, and the result will shape who leads the party as it takes control of the Senate.

Five newly elected senators have said they oppose Schumer, while incumbent Democrats have not publicly declared against him; no challenger has emerged. Schumer said Democrats should focus on voters’ priorities, including the cost of living, corruption and ending the Iran war, and said the Senate would investigate Donald Trump if he broke the law or defied voters’ will.
