## Key points

- Incoming senators and progressives oppose Schumer’s leadership.
- The dispute reflects divisions over Israel policy.
- Schumer remains likely to lead the Senate majority.

## Summary

Chuck Schumer faces opposition from several incoming Democratic senators and progressive groups as he seeks to lead the Senate majority. The dispute reflects divisions over party leadership and, in particular, US support for Israel.

Senators-elect Adam Hamilton, Troy Jackson and Abdul El-Sayed have said they will oppose Schumer, a long-time supporter of military aid to Israel. Progressive group Indivisible called for new leadership after Democrats’ midterm victory, while a poll found a supermajority of Jewish Americans believe Israel’s and Aipac’s actions are increasing antisemitism in the US. Schumer is still likely to retain the role, as no senior Democratic senators have shown interest, and he has urged the party to focus on unity.
