BBC axes Claudia Winkleman’s Friday night chat show after single run
Claudia Winkleman has announced she is stepping down from the BBC chat show she launched earlier this year, after fronting just one series of seven episodes. The programme, made by Graham Norton's production company So Television, filled the Friday night BBC One slot Norton vacated in spring, but Winkleman said she found herself "too nervous to enjoy it" despite being grateful to the BBC for the opportunity.
The series aired in spring and attracted guests including Lisa Kudrow, Jeff Goldblum, Niall Horan, Rachel Zegler, Ralph Fiennes and James McAvoy, drawing an average combined audience of 1.5m to 2m viewers per episode. Critical reception was mixed, with some praising its banter while others called it "messy" and "a bit of a bore". BBC entertainment director Ed Havard said the broadcaster respected her decision, and Winkleman is set to return to screens soon when The Celebrity Traitors airs later this year.
